Comparison Kills.

Comparison is honestly the thief of joy. I’m realising this more and more as I get older, and it’s becoming more and more apparent in my life. Comparison has always been a problem through the years, but I feel today in our online world we’re constantly exposed to it. Before, it was movie stars and celebrities, today it’s Instagram girls too.

During my teen years, I never felt any pressure of comparison. I never compared myself to other girls, and I was always very happy and confident. What changed, was when a guy decided to compare me to other girls. Sometimes, with this comparison, I would come out on top, so he’d say. And yet, there is still that bitter pang of something just not feeling right. Why do I have to be compared to her, even if you say I’m better? Why are we obsessed with pinning people against each other?

And we can compare ourselves in all areas of our lives. Our careers are a major area. Why didn’t I get that promotion? Why am I not getting that pay rise? Why are they moving ahead of me when we started at the same time? Focusing on other people will only hinder yourself. By focusing on your lack of whatever it is you crave, you are only attracting more lack. Our thoughts attract our circumstances.

The thing about comparison is that it very rarely benefits you. I was once told to compare myself to others as it was a way of self improvement, but honestly this is such a negative view to take. You are a completely unique person with a unique path to take in life. No one looks like you, talks like you, has your particular skill set, has your talents and ambitions. You are one of a kind, so what’s the point in comparing yourself to someone who is also on a completely unique path? Why compare your chapter one with someone else’s chapter twenty?

When it comes to things like Instagram, unfollow absolutely everyone that makes you feel uncomfortable about yourself. This is not harsh, or unfair. Keep your digital space full of things you want to see and things that make you feel good. There’s no need to bring yourself further down by exposing yourself to your own criticism and insecurities when using social media to escape the world for a bit.

Focusing on other people will get you no where. You need to focus on your life and how you’re going to make it extraordinary. If you want a better body, go make a plan to make that happen! If you want to do better in your career, get pen to paper and work out a way to do that. Work on loving yourself so much that you’re the only person you ever want to be, because what’s the point in trying to be someone you’re not? As the saying goes, everyone else is taken, so why not just be yourself?

The only way you will ever stand out in a world full of clones is to be unapologetically yourself. So go be you!
