Okay, so don’t get me wrong, but is anyone else bored by the idea of ‘dinner and a movie’? While I think it’s a really fun thing to do sometimes, I’ve seen a lot of couples fall into a rut of spending every date nights at a familiar restaurant and heading off to see a movie. And while I love going to the cinema every so often, it’s actually not an amazing way to spend time with someone. At least if you’re watching a movie at home, you can pause it, move around, get really comfortable, and probably do things that would be frowned upon in a public cinema. I’m much more of a takeout and pjs kind of girl when it comes to romance.
However when actually going on dates, I like to get a little bit more unconventional. So here are my favourite date night ideas for the more adventurous unconventional souls among us!
Some of the best dates I’ve had have been adventurous ones. Why not go rock climbing and get your heart rate elevated and a little workout in at the same time? I find stuff like this is actually a great way to get to know someone as you get to see what they’re like under a little bit of pressure.
Go for a reeeeally long walk.
This is actually the first date I had with Aaron my boyfriend! I think that when you go for a really long walk, be it around the city centre, up a mountain, around a lake, wherever, then you can really get to know the other person as all you can really do is talk. I find a lot of deep conversations can come up on long walks too, so you get closer to that person too. With Aaron, we actually walked all around Dublin City centre for a total of four hours on our first date. Safe to say a lot of ground was covered in terms of getting to know each other!
Learn something together!
On my third date with Aaron, we went to an old military-barracks-turned-museum in Dublin (where my family’s old glass business is actually on display!). Getting to know each other’s opinions when it comes to art, history, culture and politics can be really insightful and eye-opening and can also tell you a lot about the other person. Go to a class together, a museum or an art gallery and just take in the history.
Go outside of your comfort zone.
This is quite a broad one, but something that will always make a fun date. Even if you don’t enjoy the other person’s company, you’ll at least have experienced something cool and gotten out of your comfort zone. This could be as simple as trying out a type of food neither one of you has had before, to going shark cage diving. Whatever it is that gets you out of your comfort zone, now is the perfect time to try it!
Those are all of my ideas for unconventional date night ideas! Let me know if you’ve tried any of them or what kind of dates you like!
