Recently I’ve started rewatching one of my favourite TV series ever made. I’ve been watching Sex and the City for about seven years now, and I’ve never gotten tired/bored of it. And as it would seem, a lot of other people agree with me!
So why is it that this tv show about four friends in Manhatten has stayed in the hearts of so many, for so long? For me, I love how unfiltered the show is. The characters are flawed, and that’s what makes them so real. There’s nothing worse than a two-dimensional character who does nothing wrong!
I love all of the characters at some points, and I hate them all at others. I feel you can learn a lot about yourself from the traits you like and dislike in other people, and every time I watch this show or the accompanying movies, I always take something new from it.
All that being said, I have about a hundred favourite quotes from this movie. And to be honest, most of them come from Samantha! But here are my 15 favourite quotes that I feel will always be relevant.
“And we were dressed from head to toe in love, the style that never goes out of fashion.”
If you’re a Cancerian like me then you probably also feel that love comes before everything. Self-love, romantic love, platonic love, family love…. it’s all important.
“But the most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all, is the one you have with yourself. And, if you find someone to love the you that you love, well, that’s just fabulous.”
I love this quote because it reminds us of a very important practice we all need to do: self-love. You have to love yourself before anyone else can.
“Maybe our mistakes are what makes our fate. Without them, what would shape our lives?”
I wholeheartedly agree with this! I believe that our mistakes are what shape us as humans, and we always learn something new about ourselves from them.
“I admit it’s tempting to wish for the perfect boss, or the perfect parent, or the perfect outfit, but the best any one of us can do is not quit. Play the hand we’ve been given, and accessorise the outfit we’ve got.”
This quote is all about making the most of what we’ve been given. We can often say that we think life has dealt us an unfair hand, or how the odds are stacked against you, but in the end, you’re the only one who has control over your life. If you can’t control the situation, you can control how you react to it.
“Maybe some women aren’t meant to be tamed. Maybe they need to run free until they find someone, just as wild, to run with.”
I don’t even think this one needs an explanation.
“The most important thing in life is your family. There are days you love them and others you don’t, but in the end, they’re the people you always come home to. Sometimes it’s the family you’re born into. And sometimes it’s the one you make for yourself.”
I love this quote mainly for the last sentence. It can be really hard when you don’t get along with your family members. Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that bring about a rift, and other times it’s just a clash of vibes and energy. It’s okay to not get along with your biological family. The family you make and choose for yourself, even if they’re a close circle of friends, can be everything you need.
“Stop being a bitch”
“I’m not being a bitch. I’m just being myself.”
So this is a bit of a random one, but I love it nonetheless. When John says to Carrie to stop being a bitch, it reminds me that there’s always going to be some part of you that not everyone will like. But that doesn’t mean you should change who you are to suit anyone else. My next quote is the perfect follow up…
“Somewhere out there is another little freak who will love us… and kiss our three heads and make it all better. And in the meantime, we always have Manhatten.”
Like above, you should never alter yourself just so people will like you. Because somewhere in the world there’s someone who will totally get you.
“Friendships don’t magically last 40 years. You have to invest in them. It’s like your savings: you don’t expect to wake up one day when you’re old and find a big bucket of money waiting there.”
Friendships require two-way communication and effort. If you find that you’re investing more than your friend, you need to re-evaluate. Find someone who gives as much as they take from your friendship.
“I am someone who is looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can’t-live-without-each-other love.”
To be honest, this is one of my life mottos. Don’t ever give half of your heart to something, it’s just not worth it.
“Who am I to judge anyone? I had bangs in the 80s.”
To be honest this is both hilarious and relevant. I’m sure we’ve all had a dodgy haircut (or eyebrows, probably) at one stage, so really, who are you to judge anyone?
“Here’s to the guys who love us, the losers who lost us, and the lucky bastards who get to meet us.”
Queen Samantha, all hail! This is probably my favourite quote from the series. It’s a great outlook.
“Some love stories aren’t epic novels. Some are short stories, but that doesn’t make them any less filled with love.”
Every relationship you have will teach you something. Even ones that you think are irrelevant and ones you don’t care about. Everything you do will teach you something about yourself.
“After a while, you just want to be with the one that makes you laugh.”
John Preston is honestly my favourite character from the show. I’m not even sorry! He’s determined, ambitious, hilarious, and let’s be honest, just plain sexy. I love this quote because we all have our “checklist” of perfect personality traits that we want our significant other to have. But if we’re really honest with ourselves, there’s nothing worse than a relationship without humour. Having a similar sense of humour is key to any relationship.
“Are we enough?”
“Kid, we’re too much.”
I’m including this quote because it sums up my perfect relationship. ‘Too much’ is just perfect.
